On Wednesday when driving home from work, the afternoon presenter on Magic FM, here in the UK, were asking Where Were You? on 11th September. I replied with the following - which was read live on radio.

I have just heard you asking what people were doing on Sept 11th last year. I was flying across the Atlantic on United Airlines to go on holiday with two friends, needless to say we never made it to our final destination, our plane landed in Gander Newfoundland and when we finally disembarked 26 hours after getting on at Heathrow we were taken to small town called Gambo and looked after by The Salvation Army until we left them in the early hours of 16th Sept.

The whole congregation looked after us extremely well feeding us three meals a day and taking us to their homes for showers, providing us with clothes while they laundered ours, as we were not allowed any baggage from the hold.

There were 199 passengers in total on our plane and there were two other plane loads of people brought to the same town and looked after by The Lions Club and another church.

Many of the passengers from our plane have kept in touch via a website set up by a fellow passenger and we plan a reunion on Saturday of all the passengers who can make it.

We were entertained each evening by a professional singer Julian Dawson who just happened to be on board our plane.

We finally arrived in Chicago at lunch time on 16th only to turn around and fly back home again.

Linda
